A Lady's Farewell to Scottish Country Dancing

Ye who dance gaily to Scottish refrain
Sigh for me now and share with my pain.
I used to dance reel, jig and strathspey,
And then I was happy, carefree and gay,
But now I must mourn for my Bonnie Wee Mac,
He went down the middle and never came back.

I've looked in the Corners and Reels on the Side,
And asked Fourth couple if they know where he bides,
I must go on looking, I can't give up yet,
He may have got lost in an All Round Poussette.
Oh, woe for me now, Oh woe and alack,
He went down the middle and never came back.

In pas-de-basque setting and round the Grand Chain,
And even in Promenade, I've sought him in vain.
The Allemande comes, I can't stop to admire,
I must search for him in Advance and Retire.
It can't last must longer, something will crack,
He went down the middle and never came back.

He didn't cast up and he didn't cast down,
I've sought him in Triangles, Double and Crown,
In Four Hands Across, there wasn't a sign.
Perhaps he is somewhere balancing in Line.
I think I'll give up, he's left not a track,
He went down the middle and never came back.

I've searched in "The Frisky" and "White Heather Jig",
In "Triumph" and "Cadgers" and even "Lea Rig".
He's vanished for ever, I'm beginning to think,
Oh! There's one last figure, I'll check Set and Link.
But no, he's not there, I'm feeling quite black.
He went down the middle and never came back.

So, "Farewell my Fancy" and "Adieu Mon Ami",
I think I must leave Scottish country.
I'm desperate to find him, I've searched all I can,
The main reason being, I can't dance as a man.
So all my good friends, I must rush off and pack,
He went down the middle and never came back.

Why should I worry, why should I moan,
I'll go and take "Highland" and dance on my own,
With Flora MacDonald and perhaps Scottish Lilt,
With them, I won't need a man in a kilt.
So, beware, all you ladies, don't hold your man slack,
If he goes down the middle he may never come back.
